Why Not You?

Carolyn HillFaith

Big tree limbs had fallen across our street from a storm. After dodging them for 2 days, I was frustrated that they were still there! Come on somebody, clean it up already!! Then the Holy Spirit said, “Why not you?” I reluctantly pulled over, moved the limbs, and in 5 minutes the deed was done. Here’s why I’m sharing this: many times I don’t act because I think someone else should do it! I can’t fix everything, but how many times does God put an opportunity in my path and I think it’s someone else’s job? I think the key is being willing to listen to the Holy Spirit. If He prompts us to act, it’s our job!
The very next day I saw an employee of a fast food place sitting by the dumpster with her head in her hands. Again, I felt prompted to act…to pray for her. Sure it takes some uncomfortableness to do this kind of thing, and I can easily rationalize that #1, I don’t know this person and #2, shouldn’t somebody else help her?? Hmmm. Moving tree limbs is not a big deal, but praying with someone, giving a helping hand, a word of encouragement, or being the one who stands up for what’s right…could actually change someone’s entire course in life! Instead of “why me” how about “why not me?”

The truth is, these opportunities are what make life truly blessed. As my pastor says, “Ask God: what do you have for me to do today?”
1 John 4:11-12 says, “Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.”
